Two Sites; one with a pump application and the other running cooling fans. Both of them approached us for help with reducing energy costs.
The first site operated 30kW alkaline pumps on an 8-minute cycle when the application only needed them running for 2.5 minutes. The traditional DOL start did not allow for the pumps to be stopped during the process and so they had to run continuously.
Installing a drive on the application took over the control of the on-off process and allowed the pumps to be turned on and off as required. Running the pumps for only the 2.5 minutes needed rather than the full 8 minutes reduced energy consumption on the application by a staggering 90%.
The second site was using fans to cool down their product. The application was controlled by a damper, which on inspection was virtually fully closed. Although a damper reduces the power to the fans, the overall power consumption remains the same, as if the damper was fully open.
Sentridge carried out a site survey and advised installing an ABB ACS580 variable speed drive. The damper was opened up fully and the fan speed controlled by the inverter. Energy consumption went down from 7.5 kW to 0.5kW, saving this customer over 90% in energy used.
