Sentridge Control has been working closely with the Water Sector for many years, implementing process improvement and energy saving solutions at hundreds of water sites across the UK.
One in particular recently required to upgrade their IE3 motors, to improve the reliability and reduce their energy usage at a critical site.
After carrying out a site survey, Sentridge Control recommended the implementation of a solution using ABB’s IE5 Premium Performance Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM) technology motor technology along with matching ACQ580 VSD’s.
The SynRM motors provide many benefits including reduced running costs, cooler running and lower maintenance costs.
What makes a SynRM Motor different?
The rotor in an ABB synchronous reluctance motor has no magnets or windings and as a consequence significantly minimises power losses. In addition, due to the fact there are no magnetic forces in the rotor, carrying out maintenance is straightforward.
Unlike conventional motor efficiencies, these motors are rated at IE5 when matched with an inverter, meaning the drive and motor package is more efficient than a traditional motor/drive configuration.
The SynRM motors are WIMES compliant as standard for Water Industry Applications.
The result speaks for itself.
By comparing the same flow and pressure rates as the old IE3 motors and the IE5 SynRM Motors with Inverters, the energy consumption has been reduced by around 4.5% with payback times of less than 3 years.
At the present energy prices, the site is set to save over £40,000 a year in running costs, this could be even more should the price of energy continue to increase.
