An egg farm housing 500,000 chickens found itself paying out a reactive power charge of over £350 a month for having a consistently low Power Factor. A score of 1 equates to a perfect Power Factor, 0.95 is an acceptable level, but the farm was reading 0.8 which resulted in the monthly penalty charge.
The farm’s ventilation system relied on a large number of motors which added induction to the load and used power inefficiently.
The farmer was happy with how his processes were running and challenged Phil Tomkinson from Sentridge to resolve the Power Factor issues without affecting his applications.
A Power Factor Correction Unit had been installed a number of years previously, but had become redundant after failing. It had been isolated from the supply and was in a state of dilapidation.
Following a full assessment of the old unit, Phil decided that repairing it would be the best and most economical solution. The faulty component capacitors and contactors were replaced, and the Power Factor Correction Unit was back up and running in no time.
The Power Factor reading instantly improved and the £350 per month penalty reduced dramatically to just £3 per month. Payback on the work carried out was achieved in less than 6 months.
